What ARE the benefits of music?

Musical training is a more potent instrument than any other, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul.”

– Plato, The Republic

We’ve all heard that music is beneficial to our learning, but have you ever sat down and learned WHY?  Music uses multiple parts of the brain, so our brain is doing a super workout every time we are fully engaged in music.  And thankfully the effects are more long-term than the gym membership we all got in January and may or may not still be using.  Here are some fundamental aspects of how music encourages learning:

-Language development: we learn to better recognize speech patterns since they are often parallel to those of musical patterns.  We also learn to express ourselves and communicate using another outlet.

-Physical coordination: learning to tap out rhythms, play an instrument, or dance to the beat incorporate large and small muscle groups.

-Academic: music helps us think creatively in terms of patterns, communication, and problem solving

-Social: we learn to work with others as well as by ourselves as we perform and play
